Pre-sessional English

Pre-sessional courses are academically challenging, intensive courses that run in the spring and summer for 6, 8, 12 and 19 weeks. They are taught by highly qualified and experienced teaching staff who are dedicated to preparing students to operate successfully at a high academic level. Pre-sessional courses focus primarily on developing academic skills common to a range of disciplines and the English language proficiency required for study at a world-leading university.

The courses are specifically designed for students who are planning to study on a graduate degree programme (MA, MSc, LLM, MPhil/PhD), whose first language is not English and who need to meet the language requirement of their conditional offer.

The overarching aim of the pre-sessional courses is for students to develop academic skills common to a range of disciplines and English language proficiency to at least the level considered by their degree programme to be sufficient for university study. Specifically, it aims to:

  • develop students’ skills in understanding and analysing academic texts and use them in writing and speaking
  • help students more fully understand lectures while taking effective notes
  • improve students’ ability to speak in academic contexts, with emphasis on oral presentations and seminars
  • develop students’ ability to write relevant, well-argued essays and examination answers in an academic style
  • improve students’ English grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation as used in academic contexts
  • build up students’ independent and library based research skills
