There are different types of diabetes, all types are complex and serious. The three main types of diabetes are:
1. Type 1 – Type 1 diabetes is an auto-immune condition in which the immune system is activated to destroy the cells in the pancreas which produce insulin. Symptoms of Type 1 diabetes
- Low body temperature
- Weight loss—despite eating more
- Reduced blood pressure
- Rapid heart rate
2. Type 2 – A chronic condition that affects the way the body processes blood sugar. Symptoms of Type 2 diabetes
- Blurred vision
- Unusual thirst
- Extreme hunger
- Recurring urination
- Cuts or bruises that are slow to heal
- Recurring infections
- Extreme fatigue
- Irritability
3. Gestational diabetes – Gestational diabetes mellitus (sometimes referred to as GDM) is a form of diabetes that occurs during pregnancy and usually goes away after the baby is born. It is diagnosed when higher than normal blood glucose levels first appear during pregnancy.
- Dry mouth
- Very thirsty
- Feel tired
- Recurring infections
- Blurred vision
In type 1 diabetes, symptoms are often sudden and can be life-threatening; therefore it is usually diagnosed quite quickly. In type 2 diabetes, many people have no symptoms at all, and most of signs can go unnoticed being seen as part of getting older.
